Welding courses cover MIG, TIG, MMA (stick), and oxy-fuel welding processes, structural and pipe welding, metal cutting, fabrication techniques, blueprint reading, and weld testing and inspection. You will study workplace health and safety, hazardous materials handling, and Australian welding standards.
Practical workshop time is the heart of the program - you will work with carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminium on a range of welding projects that simulate real industry requirements. Assessment is competency-based, aligned with the expectations of Australian employers.
Completion leads to a Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade (Welding) - the nationally recognised AQF trade qualification for welders and metal fabricators in Australia.
Qualified welders find employment in mining, oil and gas, shipbuilding, manufacturing, structural steel, and construction throughout Australia. Demand is particularly high in Western Australia, Queensland, and the Northern Territory.

Welding leads to a Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade (Welding), a nationally recognised AQF Level 3 trade qualification for welders and metal fabricators. Most providers deliver it over roughly 12 months of full-time study, with the bulk of the timetable spent in the workshop given the competency-based, hands-on nature of the trade.
Indicative tuition for international students commonly sits in the AUD 8,000 to 18,000 range for the full qualification, though this varies by provider and location. Most providers offer several intakes a year, commonly around February, April or May, July and October, so there are regular opportunities to begin.
These figures are indicative and subject to change. Active Study helps you find a provider with the right facilities for MIG, TIG, stick and oxy-fuel training, then confirms the exact current fees, consumables or PPE costs and intake dates before you enrol.
After completing your Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade (Welding), the typical path is to gain Australian work experience in fabrication, mining or construction, applying where eligible for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) so you can keep working while you build your skills assessment case.
As the course explains, welding and fabrication trades are eligible for state-nominated skilled visas and in some cases general skilled migration. In practice this most often means state nomination through a subclass 190 permanent visa or a subclass 491 regional provisional visa, with general skilled options depending on your occupation and the lists in force. Whether you qualify depends on your points, a positive skills assessment and current state nominations.
