What You'll Study

Active Study supports international students who want to pursue a career in social work - one of Australia's most human-centred and impactful professions. From community development to child protection and mental health support, social workers are in demand across every state and territory.

Social work courses cover social welfare policy, human development, counselling, case management, community development, advocacy, crisis intervention, and working with vulnerable populations including children, elderly, and people with mental health conditions.

Field placements with registered organisations are mandatory - providing real-world experience in government agencies, not-for-profit organisations, hospitals, and community health services. Reflective practice and ethical decision-making are woven throughout the program.

VET-level programs lead to a Diploma of Community Services as a foundational qualification; university programs lead to a Bachelor of Social Work accredited by the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).

Cost and duration of Social Work courses in Australia

Fees & Timeline

Cost, Duration & Intake Dates

Social work study in Australia spans two distinct routes. At the vocational level, a Diploma of Community Services (AQF Level 5) acts as a foundational qualification and generally takes around 1 to 2 years, while a professional Bachelor of Social Work accredited by the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) is a university degree that usually takes four years full-time. As an indication only, the vocational diploma commonly falls in the range of roughly AUD 9,000 to AUD 18,000 in total, whereas university bachelor programs are considerably higher and are charged per year by each institution.

Vocational providers typically offer several intakes a year - often around February, April or May, July and October - while university social work degrees usually have more limited entry points, commonly at the start of semesters. Mandatory field placements are part of both routes and can influence your overall timeline.

These figures are indicative and vary by provider, level and location. Active Study confirms the exact current fees, the intake calendar and the placement and accreditation requirements, and helps you choose between the diploma pathway and an AASW-accredited degree based on your goals.

Permanent residency pathway after a Social Work course in Australia

Study to PR

Your PR Pathway After This Course

The course entry notes that Social Worker is listed on Australia's Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) for AASW-accredited graduates, which creates a direct line into general skilled migration. This distinction matters: the national pathway is tied to completing an AASW-accredited qualification and meeting the assessment standards, rather than the foundational diploma alone.

After graduating from an accredited program, eligible candidates can often apply for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) to gain Australian work experience, then pursue a skills assessment as a Social Worker. Because the occupation is on the MLTSSL, you may be eligible to be considered for skilled visas including the subclass 189 (independent), subclass 190 (state nominated) or subclass 491 (regional), subject to your points, your skills assessment and current requirements.

Points thresholds, occupation lists and assessment rules change over time, so eligibility is never guaranteed. Active Study's MARA-registered migration agents will confirm the requirements for your specific qualification level and map a current, realistic pathway towards permanent residency.
