Hairdressing courses cover cutting, colouring, perming, chemical relaxing, scalp and hair treatments, blow-drying and styling, and salon management. You will study trichology (the science of hair), client consultation, colour theory, and safe use of chemicals and equipment.
Practical in-salon training is the core of the program - you will work with real clients under supervision from your very first weeks, developing both technical precision and customer service skills. First aid and workplace health and safety are also covered.
The standard qualification is a Certificate III in Hairdressing - the entry-level AQF trade qualification required to work as a hairdresser in Australia.
Graduates work as hairdressers, colourists, and salon managers in hair salons, barbershops, hotels, and theatrical and media production environments throughout Australia.

Hairdressing is delivered as a Certificate III in Hairdressing, the entry-level AQF trade qualification required to work as a hairdresser in Australia. As an indicative guide, total tuition for this qualification commonly ranges from around AUD 8,000 to AUD 16,000, reflecting the significant in-salon practical training involved. These figures are indicative only and vary by provider and location.
A Certificate III in Hairdressing typically takes around 12 months or longer of full-time study, because it includes extensive supervised in-salon hours working with real clients to develop technical precision. The qualification is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. Most providers offer several intakes a year, commonly in February, April or May, July, and October, so you can usually find a convenient start date.
Because hairdressing courses depend heavily on salon facilities and client access, fees and structures differ between providers. Active Study helps you choose a provider with strong practical training, then confirms the exact current tuition and intake dates before you enrol.
