For most international students, Australia's student visa (Subclass 500) is the entry point to an experience that can genuinely reshape their lives and careers. Understanding the visa requirements, application process, and ongoing conditions helps you approach the process with confidence rather than anxiety.

This guide provides a comprehensive overview of Australia's student visa framework - from initial eligibility through to visa conditions and what happens after graduation.

Who Needs an Australian Student Visa?

Any person who is not an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or New Zealand citizen who wishes to study a full-time course of more than three months at a CRICOS-registered institution requires a Subclass 500 student visa.

Short courses of less than three months may be undertaken on a tourist visa in some circumstances, but this is subject to specific conditions and is not suitable for full academic programs.

Core Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Subclass 500, you must:

  • Have been accepted into a CRICOS-registered course (evidenced by a Confirmation of Enrolment)
  • Demonstrate that you are a genuine student with genuine study intentions (the Genuine Student requirement)
  • Meet English language requirements (or be exempt)
  • Demonstrate financial capacity to meet tuition, living, and travel costs
  • Hold Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of your visa
  • Meet health and character requirements

The Application Process

All Subclass 500 applications are lodged online through the Department of Home Affairs' ImmiAccount portal. The process involves:

  1. Receiving your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from your institution
  2. Arranging Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
  3. Gathering supporting documents (passport, financial evidence, English results, academic records)
  4. Writing your Genuine Student statement
  5. Completing and lodging the online application form
  6. Paying the application fee (approximately AUD 650, subject to change)
  7. Completing any required health examinations if requested
  8. Awaiting a decision (typically 4-8 weeks)

Visa Conditions

The Subclass 500 visa comes with conditions that you must comply with throughout your stay. Key conditions include:

  • You must remain enrolled at a CRICOS-registered institution and make satisfactory academic progress
  • You must maintain OSHC for the duration of your visa
  • You must notify your institution of any change of address within seven days
  • You must comply with any specific work conditions on your visa grant notice

After Graduation - Your Next Visa Options

Upon completing your Australian qualification, several visa options may be available to you:

  • Subclass 485 Post-Study Work Visa: For graduates of Bachelor's programs and above, this provides 2-6 years to live and work in Australia without restrictions
  • Subclass 482 Temporary Skill Shortage: If an Australian employer offers you a position in a shortage occupation, your employer can sponsor you for this visa
  • Further Student Visa (Subclass 500): If you wish to undertake further study, you can apply for a new student visa
  • Skilled Migration Visas (189/190/491): If you meet the points requirements and your occupation is on the skills shortage list, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residency

The Broader Immigration Framework

Australia's student visa system sits within a broader skilled migration framework that is designed to attract talented graduates to remain in the country. Understanding how the student visa connects to post-study work rights and skilled migration - and planning your study choices accordingly - is the foundation of a successful long-term strategy.
